Glover eyes third PGA Tour success in Bermuda

The PGA Tour makes a trip to the Caribbean this week as the Butterfield Bermuda Championship takes place at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda, beginning on Thursday, November 9. 500 FedEx points are on offer, as is a prize purse totaling $6,500,000.

The course, a 6,828-yard par 71, is ranked 45th out of 55 venues this season in terms of course difficulty and boasts an average round score of 69.159. It's also the shortest course on the PGA Tour in terms of yardage, which could benefit the big drivers as well as those who excel in the short yardage game.

American Lucas Glover (20/1) is the highest ranked golfer in attendance, currently ranked 31st in the world. He won back-to-back tournaments in August with success at the Wyndham Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship – our selection at 80/1 to win the former.

He is much shorter odds this week, and comes into the tournament in solid form. Since his twin victories, Glover has finished 22nd, 18th and 59th in PGA Tour events, but his stats suggest the course in Bermuda could suit him.

His approach play has been exquisite in 2023, he ranks first on the Tour in proximity to the hole and ranks in the top 50 for birdie average, par 4s, scrambling and sand save percentage. His putting is the one question mark – he's 165th in shots gained putting, 127th in putts per round and 85th in one-putt percentage.

Given the short nature of the course, those looking for an outsider to consider in the place finish markets could look at Brent Grant (175/1). Grant excels off the tee – he is fifth on the Tour in shots gained off the tee, first in total driving, 18th in drive distance and 38th in drive accuracy.

That is just about all that Grant has going for him, he ranks extremely low in putting and approach play – but he has sneaked into the top 40 in his past two tournaments – a third, with a weaker field, is in the realms of possibility (8/5).

Doug Ghim (33/1) is another outsider to look at for a place finish. The American is third on the Tour in greens hit in regulation, which should be beneficial in Bermuda. He is above average off the tee, ranks well in total driving and drive accuracy, and has a healthy scoring average of 69.89 per round.

If Ghim can have a good week on the green, he could be in contention for the top 10 (15/4) and may be worth a small wager on the victory.

Those eyeing a wager on a previous winner at the tournament have both 2021 winner Lucas Herbert (20/1) and 2019 winner Brendon Todd (18/1) on the start list. Herbert has three top 30 finishes in his last five tournaments, while Brendon has two top ten finishes in his last five.

Todd ranks top 20 in several putting and around the green statistics, as well as being top 40 in scoring. His work off the tee lets him down, but with form at the course, Todd could be a great selection for a top 10 finish (23/10).

For those looking to back one of the favourites, New Zealand's Adam Scott (16/1) is the lowest price ahead of Todd, Akshay Bhatia (18/1), Glover, Herbert and Thomas Detry (20/1)
