Burmester eyes third successive DP World Tour victory

The 2023-24 DP World Tour continues in South Africa this weekend with the Alfred Dunhill Championship, staged at the 7,249-yard, par 72, Leopard Creek Country Club, which overlooks Kruger National Park.

Following the Joburg Open and Investec South African Open Championship over the past two weeks – both won by the in-form Dean Burmester - the Alfred Dunhill Championship – which is the sister tournament of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews – completes a trio of competitions in the African nation before the tour heads to the UAE in the new year.

Unsurprisingly, Burmester's odds have reduced dramatically and he is considered the 7/1 favourite for the tournament this week. The 34-year-old had won just two DP World Tour events in his career prior to November 26 this year but has doubled that tally in the last fortnight.

Burmester joined LIV Golf in February and has showcased his skill in the LIV Golf League. He ranks second in drive distance (318.2 yards), second in eagles with 10, and ranks top 20 in putting average, greens hit in regulation and birdies made. He's 19/10 to finish top five, Evens to finish top 10 and is 14/1 to win the tournament by three or more strokes – a feat he has achieved in all four of his Tour wins.

Fellow South African Thriston Lawrence (16/1) is also likely to contend. The 27-year-old, like Burmester, has four DP World Tour wins on his resumé - with two of those wins coming in his native country. Lawrence has consecutive top 10 finishes over the past three tournaments and ranks top 10 in score average at 69.00 per round on the Tour.  A 2/1 top 10 finish seems on the cards, with a top three performance priced at 6/1.

There are plenty of former winners in attendance – including several more South African interests. Defending champion Ockie Strydom is a 250/1 shot to retain his title, 2020 winner Christiaan Bezuidenhout is second favourite at 12/1, and four-time victor Charl Schwartzel is fancied at 30/1. Brandon Stone (110/1) and Brandon Grace 14/1 also have titles to their name.

Strydom in an enticing proposition priced at 250/1, but his form leaves a lot to be desired. He has finished outside of the top 60 in his past five tournaments, missed the cut four times and carded just a single under par round in his last 12. He scored –18 at the Leopard Creek course 12 months ago and a small wager on a top 40 finish (21/10) could be tempting.

The outside fancy for this one could be Englishman Dale Whitnell (125/1). The 35-year-old finished tied-17th at last week's South African Open Championship and boasted a pair of under 70 rounds in the process. He's especially prolific around the green – he's 14th in putts per green (1.70), 20th in average putts per round (27.75) and 20th in sand save percentage (68.42%). A top 20 finish at 4/1 could be a solid punt.
