NSW Swifts goal shooter Sam Wallace will miss the rest of the Super Netball season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in their season-opening derby loss to the Giants.

Wallace went down clutching her right knee in the final 10 minutes of Saturday night's 57-55 defeat at Ken Rosewall Arena.

The Trinidad and Tobago international was taken to hospital immediately after the game where scans were conducted and confirmed the injury.

"This is obviously a devastating blow for Sam and the team and we are all absolutely shattered," head coach Briony Akle said.

"Sam's worked so hard throughout pre-season to overcome an injury to her other knee. To have her season over is simply heartbreaking.

"If there's one positive thing Sam has on her side though, it's that this team is her family. There is no closer group in the competition, and we will help get her through this.

"She is extremely tough too. It won't be easy, but we're sure Sammy will be back and continue to be one of the best shooters in the world."

At 193cm tall, Wallace's absence leaves a huge void in the Swifts' line-up and the club will assess their options on a replacement player.
