Australian cyclist Luke Durbridge was announced as a late addition to the Commonwealth Games team on the same day COVID-19 forced him out of the Tour de France.

Luke Durbridge has joined the Australian Commonwealth Games cycling team on the same day that COVID-19 forced him out of the Tour de France.

The highly respected domestique was added to the road race team because team commitments forced Michael Matthews and Kaden Groves to withdraw from the Games.

The three cyclists all ride for the Australian-based BikeExchange-Jayco team.

Durbridge withdrew from the Tour after testing positive to the virus, with his team saying he has "very mild" symptoms.

If he rides in the Games time trial, he has until August 4 to prove his health.

The road race will be held on August 7.

Durbridge is a stalwart of Australian track and road teams and this will be his third Games.

Mountain bike rider Sam Fox, who is making his Games debut, will also double up in the road race to fill the other vacancy in their lineup.

Durbridge was among four additions to the Games team, with Rebecca Greiner and Grace Stewart added to the Hockeyroos team after Brooke Peris and Courtney Schonell dropped out because of injury.

Greiner was left out of the Hockeyroos squad for the last two years, while Stewart was a member of the team that won silver at the 2018 Gold Coast Games.

Grant Fehlberg has pulled out of the Birmingham bowls team for family reasons and Matthew Northcott will make his Games debut instead.
