Australian cycling gold medal hope Caleb Ewan has had surgery after his luckless Tour de France, putting him in some doubt for the Commonwealth Games.

Caleb Ewan is in some doubt for the Commonwealth Games after the cycling star needed surgery.

His team Lotto-Soudal announced on Tuesday morning that Ewan, who would be the main Australian medal hope in the August 7 road race, had an operation to remove a plate from his right collarbone.

It is unclear when he will be able to return to racing.

Ewan badly broke the collarbone early in last year's Tour de France, forcing him out of the race.

Lotto-Sousal revealed Ewan had this latest operation on Monday, the day after he finished the Tour de France.

"Caleb Ewan went to the hospital for a check up of the collarbone he broke in last year's Tour," the team said.

"To solve the issues he had with his shoulder and arm, the decision was made to take out the plate that was placed on his collarbone.

"The surgery was succesful. Further examinations will determine the recovery process."

On Sunday, Ewan finished a luckless Tour de France that featured two crashes and no stage wins.

He also fumed at rival sprinter Alexander Kristoff after they tangled during the high-speed finish to Sunday's last stage in Paris.
