Injury could solve Tigers' dilemma for now

Wests Tigers will wait for the severity of Jackson Hastings' knee injury to be assessed before determining their halves' combination for next week's game.

The Wests Tigers' halves dilemma could be taken out of their hands for the short-term after halfback Jackson Hastings injured his knee in the loss to Parramatta.

Now that Adam Doueihi has recovered from an ACL injury, the Tigers have two men vying to partner Hastings at five-eighth: Doueihi and the incumbent Luke Brooks.

But both would likely line up in the halves against Penrith next weekend if Hastings is ruled out injured.

The halfback managed to play the entirety of Saturday's 28-20 loss to Parramatta but was limping at full-time and had ice strapped to his knee.

Hastings consulted with club medical staff on Saturday night and will go in for further assessment on Monday.

"It was pretty scary at the time, I thought I'd done my knee initially with the pain I was in," Hastings said.

"It was a bit clicky throughout the game.

"Fingers crossed it's nothing too serious."

If Hastings is able to play against the Panthers, the Tigers' halves conundrum appears no closer to being solved.

Playing at centre, Doueihi got through his first 80-minute game since injuring his ACL late last season.

"(The ACL) feels good," he said.

"After my first 80-minute game, it pulled up really well."

He has also assumed place-kicking duties on his return to the side and had the chance to show off his kicking in play against the Eels.

"He's got a great kick. Adam's kicking game is important for us," said interim coach Brett Kimmorley.

"Every part of that skill is important for us: kick-offs, punt-kicking, goalkicking, short kicking game."

But Brooks continues to have the support of his teammates, despite being subject to intense external scrutiny this season.

At five-eighth on Saturday night, he sent David Nofoaluma over for two late tries as the Tigers threatened to wage a late comeback.

"Brooksy's a freak," said second-rower Luke Garner.

"He cops way too much flak. He's definitely a pivotal player in our team and definitely one of our best players."

Hastings said he felt he and Brooks complemented one another well.

"Luke's been a cornerstone of this club for so many years," he said.

"I love playing with 'Brooksy', I really do. He's someone that allows me to play my game and I feel like this year I've allowed him to play his as well.

"He was that real calming influence, I thought he played really well (against the Eels)."

While Hastings is the most natural game manager of the three halves options, he said he didn't feel he was guaranteed selection in the halves any more than Brooks or Doueihi.

"I'm fighting for my future as well as the rest of the players in that dressing room," he said.

"All three of us want to play in the halves. That's no secret. I feel sorry for our coaching staff picking the team every week."
