Roosters' Collins taking concussion break

Lindsay Collins won't play for the Sydney Roosters in the NRL over the next "couple of weeks" as a result of successive concussions.

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson is hesitant to suggest the NRL needs to lengthen its concussion stand-down period after he announced prop Linsday Collins is taking a break from playing.

Queenslander Collins sustained head knocks in successive games, first in State of Origin III then in the Roosters' NRL win over Manly last Thursday.

Collins hasn't been named in the Roosters side to face Brisbane at the SCG on Thursday.

He becomes the second Chooks player alongside playmaker Luke Keary to take a concussion-enforced break this year.

Keary missed four games, and Robinson said Collins would be absent for a "couple of weeks".

Newcastle captain Kalyn Ponga is weighing up cutting his season short following repeated head knocks and Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen missed two months of the 2021 season due to concussion.

The NRL introduced a rule last year where players diagnosed with concussion couldn't play within an 11-day stand-down period.

However, they could return sooner providing they were given the tick of approval by an independent doctor.

"We've been around it a bit, and there's no definitive answer," Robinson said, when asked about extending that period. "There's not enough testing.

"And there's no clear picture about why someone will have a concussion and not get concussed again, why some guys don't at all and why guys have multiple (concussions).

"Guys have different recovery rates. The way that Lindsay plays, that certainly goes into it a bit as well."

Robinson said his prop was in good spirits and would continue to train at the club but would avoid contact drills.

"He looks great," Robinson said. "This one was very different from the last one.

"We've seen when we've given a few weeks off to guys (in the past) they've come back better."

The eighth-placed Roosters have a run of three straight games at the SCG before rounding out their season with an away trip to Melbourne then the opening of the new Sydney Football Stadium in the final round against South Sydney.

"We've got improvement in us," Robinson said.

"I feel strongly about what we have built towards this season. There's been a lot of work that's gone into it and now it's time to play."
