Melbourne will face Penrith on Thursday night without back-rower Felise Kaufusi, whose father Taniela died on the weekend.

In June, Kaufusi travelled to Los Angeles to be with his father in hospital, missing two NRL games and the State of Origin decider.

He returned for the Storm's round 18 game against Canberra but will sit out the Panthers match to spend time with his family.

"Everyone at Melbourne Storm is saddened to hear of the passing of Felise Kaufusi's father, Taniela on Saturday morning," the Storm wrote.

"Our thoughts are with the Kaufusi family during this time."

The Storm will name his replacement on Tuesday afternoon but Chris Lewis looms as the likeliest option, having filled in during Kaufusi's last absence.

A shoulder injury has ruled halfback Jahrome Hughes out of the game, which Melbourne must win to confirm they will finish the weekend in the top four.

The Storm will welcome Justin Olam (COVID-19) and Nick Meaney (concussion) back for the game but are still without Ryan Papenhuyzen, Christian Welch and Reimis Smith, who are missing the remainder of the season through injury.

But they have boosted their forward depth for 2023 by signing Eliesa Katoa from the Warriors on a two-year contract.

Katoa has played 42 games with the Warriors including 11 this year.

Tui Kamikamica and Tepai Moeroa have also extended their contracts with Melbourne until the end of next season.
