Embrace GF euphoria, Matterson tells Eels

Ryan Matterson says Parramatta must keep things routine and not be daunted by playing in the club's first NRL grand final in more than a decade.

The euphoria and challenge of playing in a grand final, let alone winning one, is a whole new experience for most of Parramatta's players.

Of the 17-man squad named by head coach Brad Arthur to face Penrith on Sunday at Sydney's Accor Stadium, only centre Bailey Simonsson and back-rower Ryan Matterson have previously featured in an NRL decider.

Simonsson was part of the Canberra side which lost the 2019 showpiece, while Matterson came off the bench in the Roosters' 2018 win and is the only player at Parramatta to have won a premiership.

By contrast 13 members of the Panthers team picked by Ivan Cleary turned out in last year's grand final.

While the Panthers have suggested that experience gives them an edge, Matterson said his teammates need to keep things as routine as possible if they are to get the job done.

"Don't drain your energy," Matterson said.

"You always have to be present and not think about what's coming too much.

"I love this stuff, you have to train hard and then you can get away from footy."

Matterson, who grew up as a fan of the Brisbane Broncos, knows what a victory would do for Parramatta's long-suffering supporters after seeing the wild scenes that greeted the Eels last week when they reached their first grand final since 2009.

"We know what it means and we see all the fans celebrating," he said.

"They're really passionate and that's why we love playing for the club.

"The bigger the occasion the less nervous and more excited I get.

"All the big games are played (at the Accor Stadium) - State of Origin, grand finals, semi-finals - and it's a ground you get excited to play at knowing there's 80,000 people there."
