Tedesco edges closer to Thurston with gong

James Tedesco has claimed his third players' player award to take him one shy of Johnathan Thurston, while Raecene McGregor was voted by players in the NRLW.

James Tedesco has edged closer to matching the feats of Johnathan Thurston, collecting his third players' player award on grand final night.

The Sydney Roosters fullback was on Sunday voted the best player by his peers, adding to his Rugby League Players Association top gongs in 2017 and 2019.

It leaves the 29-year-old one short of Johnathan Thurston's overall record of four since the award was introduced in 2004.

Raecene McGregor also picked up the players' player for the second NRLW competition of the year, adding to the Dally M Medal she won earlier this week.

McGregor's brilliant five-week run comes after she was forced to overcome a serious shoulder injury late last year that threatened to leave her without a club.

Eels fullback Gayle Broughton was also voted the women's rookie, while Jeremiah Nanai backed up his Dally M rookie of the year award with the men's equivalent.

Tedesco's award comes after he was easily the Roosters' best this year, averaging above 200 metres per game and busting 169 tackles.

"The fact that he has now won three Players' Champion awards and is only one short of Thurston's record of four is a testament to the quality of player and person that he is," RLPA CEO Clint Newtown said.

"Raecene is still a young player, yet she plays with the craft and intelligence of a veteran.

"She has played in every season of the NRLW and has won three Premierships with the Brisbane Broncos and Roosters.

"This year, though, Raecene has proved why she is recognised as one of the best players in the game by producing a season to remember for her personally."
