Rugby Australia, union extend pay deal

Rugby Australia and the local union have agreed to extend the players' pay deal by another year as COVID-19 continues to add financial pressure on the game.

Rugby Australia and the players' union have agreed to extend their pay-deal by another year to the end of 2022, with COVID continuing to hit the game hard.

Players agreed to voluntary pay cuts following the virus outbreak in 2020 and extended the collective bargaining agreement to 2021 amid on-going disruptions to fixture schedules.

A further one-year extension means the CBA, which covers both male and female professionals, will now run to the end of 2022.

"Whilst we would all prefer to be able to deliver a longer-term CBA, this extension will allow us all to navigate these uncharted, and uncertain waters with as much comfort as possible," RA boss Andy Marinos said in a statement.

The 2022 CBA includes a "recognition of performance" payment to reflect "the commercial upside of a winning Wallabies team", RA said, referring to the twice World Cup-winning men's national side.

Further details of that payment were not revealed.

RA also confirmed an "enhanced" daily support payment will be made for players from the women's national team as they prepare for the World Cup in New Zealand later this year.
