Urena granted ALM Mariners release

Costa Rican international striker Marco Urena has been granted an immediate release by the Central Coast Mariners, while Adelaide have signed Craig Goodwin.

The Central Coast Mariners have granted Costa Rican forward Marco Urena a release from the final year of his contract, while Adelaide have signed captain Craig Goodwin to a three-year deal.

Urena was released on Thursday, citing personal reasons for a desire to return to his homeland, in turn, opening up a visa spot for the Mariners.

The 32-year-old made 48 A-League Men appearances for the Mariners and scored 12 goals.

"I would like to thank Central Coast Mariners and all its supporters for giving my family an amazing experience in the past two seasons," Urena said.

"My family is disappointed to be returning home but I must return to Costa Rica for family reasons."

Urena joins a growing list of Mariners players heading for the exit after the club finished in fifth spot on the table and were runners-up in the FFA Cup in Nick Montgomery's first year in charge.

First-choice goalkeeper Mark Birighitti was transferred to Dundee United on Tuesday, with right back Lewis Miller (Hibernian) and centre back Kye Rowles (Hearts) also opting to further their careers in Scotland.

Experienced midfielder Oliver Bozanic has joined the Western Sydney Wanderers, while defender Ruon Tongyik has yet to finalise a club for the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, Adelaide United were given a huge boost on Thursday after being able to sign Goodwin for the next three seasons.

Goodwin had spent the past two campaigns on loan with United from Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Wehda.

United were keen to get Goodwin back on their books for good, but the deal was only completed once the 30-year-old was released by the Saudi Pro League side.

Since making his Adelaide debut in 2014, Goodwin has accumulated 138 appearances for the Reds while scoring a club-record 44 goals across three separate stints.

"I had a few different options, but Adelaide was always our preference - this is our home and we wanted our future as a family to be here," Goodwin said.

"Even though last season didn't end the way we wanted, we continued to improve throughout the year and it was memorable for the entire team.

"I believe we have a special group and can achieve great things this season, winning silverware with this club is the goal."
