Botic van de Zandschulp has suffered a straight-sets loss at the Hamburg Open but Karen Khachanov did just enough to move into the second round.

Karen Khachanov has saved two match points to win his opening clash at the Hamburg Open, but the news wasn't as good for Botic van de Zandschulp.

The fifth-seeded Dutchman suffered a surprise 6-4 6-4 loss on Monday to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Van de Zandschulp, the world No.25, was bundled out in 90 minutes by the 23-year-old Spaniard who goes on to play Jozef Kovalik after the Slovakian qualifier saw off German wildcard Max Hans Rehberg 3-6 7-5 6-1.

It took the seventh-seeded Khachanov a little over two hours 16 minutes to defeat another local wildcard in Jan-Lennard Struff 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-2).

Russian world No.26 Khachanov, who fired down 11 aces, twice saved match point at 6-5 down in the decider before forcing a tiebreak.

Elsewhere in the round of 32, Italy's Lorenzo Musetti recorded a 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 success over Dusan Lajovic of Serbia while Alex Molcan of Slovakia was a 7-5 6-3 winner over German qualifier Marko Topo.

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain opens his campaign on Tuesday against Germany's Nicola Kuhn while second seed Andrey Rublev of Russia faces Kazakh Alexander Bublik.
