Top seed Kontaveit into Hamburg quarters

World No.2 and top seed Anett Kontaveit has cruised into the second round of the WTA event in Hamburg where she'll face local hope Andrea Petkovic.

Top-seeded Anett Kontaveit has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Hamburg Open with a 6-3 6-2 win over Sweden's Rebecca Peterson.

Kontaveit, ranked second in the world, broke Peterson's serve five times in their 91-minute second-round match on Wednesday. The Estonian will take on Germany's Andrea Petkovic for a spot in the semi-finals.

It will be only Kontaveit's second appearance in a last-eight match since February after her season was disrupted by a coronavirus infection in the spring.

Fourth-seeded Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus was a 6-3 6-2 winner against Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia to set up a quarter-final meeting with seventh-seeded Maryna Zanevska.

The Belgian was a round-of-16 straight-sets winner, as was Russia's Anastasia Potapova and American Bernarda Pera.

At the Palermo Open in southern Italy, third seed Shuai Zhang of China was forced to withdraw pre-match and allow Jasmine Paolini a free ride into the quarter-finals.

Fourth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain was a 6-0 6-2 winner over Leolia Jeanjean.

Romania's Irini-Camelia Begu, the sixth seed, saw off Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin 1-6 6-2 6-4 while the seventh-seeded Anna Bondar won the all-Hungarian tie with Panna Udvardy 6-2 6-4.
