NextGen ATP stars reach Hamburg final

Carlos Alcaraz has fought off a stern test from Alex Molcan to set up a marquee Hamburg Open final against fellow NextGen ATP star Lorenzo Musetti.

Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz and fellow youngster Lorenzo Musetti have booked their places in the Hamburg Open decider with comfortable straight-sets semi-final wins.

Alcaraz prevailed over Slovakia's Alex Molcan 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 in 93 minutes on Saturday to move the Spaniard up to No.5 in the world rankings, with the No.4 spot on offer should he claim the title.

"It was tough," 19-year-old Alcaraz said post-match.

"Obviously he played really well. The first set was really close. I'm really happy to be able to end the first set playing well.

"He didn't play well in the second set. I finished the match with a lot of confidence and played very well."

Alcaraz aims to improve his 5-0 record in tour-level finals and can win his fifth title this year alone after success in Madrid, Barcelona, Miami and Rio de Janeiro. With victory against Italy's Musetti, he will break a tie with compatriot Rafael Nadal for the most titles on the 2022 ATP Tour season.

Musetti, the 20-year-old world No.62, booked his ticket to the final with a 6-3 7-6 (7-3) defeat of Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo.

"Lorenzo is playing really well," Alcaraz said.

"Of course he's a great player. It's going to be a great final. He has played great matches before the final. [I have] as well, so I have a lot of confidence for the final and hope to make it six-for-six."

Musetti is bidding for his first title in Sunday's final.
