1984 Jim Dandy Stakes

Carr de Naskra finally unleashed his explosive potential today to score a devastating 12 3/4-length victory in the $126,200 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga Race Track.

The performance, as good as any by a 3-year-old this year, made him the early co-favorite for the Aug. 18 Travers Stakes with Track Barron, who ran second to the 4-year-old Slew o' Gold in the Whitney Handicap here Saturday. The Travers, which also figures to attract Big Pistol, Gate Dancer, At the Threshold and Play On, shapes up as the definitive contest for leadership of the 3-year-old division.

Carr de Naskra set a stakes record today, winning in 1:47 2/5 for nine furlongs, faster time than accomplished by such previous Jim Dandy winners as Affirmed and Conquistador Cielo. The track was exceptionally fast, but so was the winner.
