Pipeline in winter really has no parallel. Storms from across the Pacific roll their ways onto its shallow reefs, with hordes of surfers from across the globe packing the lineup to catch their lickings or get their glory. For decades now, Gavin Beschen has been at center of it all — If he wasn’t paddling through the pack, setting up a signature Beschen bottom-turn on a Second Reef bomb, he was just across the street at home, where he lived with his family for years, close enough to hear the rumble of the surf.

However, just this year, Beschen and his family sold the house off Kam Highway, packed their boards and the mini-ramp, and relocated to an acre of land up the hill at Pupukea. It’s appropriate that, as his nickname suggests, “The Alien” now lives a little off the well-trodden path of the “7 Mile Miracle.” Beschen invited us in for a tour of the property just before Day 1 of the Volcom Pipe Pro, and gave us a fresh look at what life on the North Shore looks like for those not staying on the sand.
