Wyndspelle wins Captain Cook Stakes, Group 1, NZ$200,000 at Trentham, 1600m.
Former Waikato Guineas (Gr.2, 2000m) winner and previously six times Group 1 placed, Wyndspelle was finally rewarded here.
He was slow away but improved slightly to settle fourth last (rails).
Still well back off the back straight he, along with the field, made ground on the leaders and from the 600m was much handier.
Turning in he got off the fence, went four wide to challenge and at the 300m had three lengths to make up.
Going smoothly he ranged up to co-lead at the 200m then took over and was too strong, out by a length and a quarter at the line.
Shadows Cast was a distant third at the 1000m but much closer at the 600m where he moved out and was second at the top of the straight.
He grabbed the lead at the 300m but when challenged by the winner had no answer.
True Enough was fifth at the 600m, pulled five wide from the 400m and kept on well to hold third.
Favourite Supera was always back and had too much to do in the straight, running on for fourth, the first four clear of the rest.
